BRAZOS COUNTY ARES

Help Room

Brazos County ARES

Questions. Troubleshooting. Practical help.

An informal online session where members can get help with Winlink, NetLogger, software setup, configuration, forms, templates, and the tools we use in normal ARES operations.

Bring Your Questions

There is no formal class and no fixed curriculum. Bring a question, show us what is happening on your screen, or simply join in and follow the discussion.

We work through questions together, demonstrate features when useful, and spend time on the things operators actually need to know.

Winlink

Message creation, Outbox workflow, Telnet and RF sessions, VARA FM, message types, forms, templates, gateways, and troubleshooting.

NetLogger

Monitoring nets, logging, AIM, check-in workflows, member profiles, unit-number lookup, Standalone practice, and general configuration.

Setup & Troubleshooting

Something not connecting? A setting not behaving the way you expect? Bring it to the Help Room and we can work through it together.

ARES Tools & Workflows

Questions about Brazos ARES-specific files, operating practices, templates, profiles, and other team resources are welcome too.

How It Works

First come, first served. Help Rooms are generally scheduled for about an hour, with additional time reserved when needed.

You do not need to have a problem to attend. Listening to someone else work through a question is often one of the best ways to learn the software before you need it yourself.

Our First Virtual Help Room

We had a great first Virtual Help Room. Over nearly 90 minutes, we worked through real questions, demonstrated common workflows, and covered practical use of both NetLogger and Winlink.

  • NetLogger monitoring and logging
  • AIM side-channel coordination
  • Member profiles and unit-number lookup
  • Standalone logging practice
  • Winlink message creation and Outbox workflow
  • Telnet versus RF sessions
  • Winlink, Radio-Only, Post Office, and Peer-to-Peer message types
  • VARA FM
  • Winlink forms and templates
  • ARES-specific software resources and workflows

The format worked exactly as intended: practical, conversational, and driven by the questions that came up.

Coming Up

Future Help Rooms will continue building on those discussions, including live RF Winlink demonstrations, deeper work with forms and templates, NetLogger practice, and whatever questions members bring with them.
